Chhapaak Theatrical release poster Directed by Meghna Gulzar Produced by Fox Star Studios Deepika Padukone Govind Singh Sandhu Meghna Gulzar Written by Atika Chohan Meghna Gulzar Starring Deepika Padukone Vikrant Massey Music by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy Cinematography Malay Prakash Edited by Nitin Baid Production company Fox Star Studios Ka Productions Mriga Films Distributed by Fox Star Studios Release date 10 January 2020 Running time 120 minutes [1] Country India Language Hindi Budget ₹ 45 crore [2] Box office est. ₹ 35 crore [3] Chhapaak ( transl.  Splash) is a 2020 Indian Hindi -language drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar in collaboration with Fox Star Studios. Based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, it stars Padukone as an acid attack survivor, alongside Vikrant Massey. [4] The film was announced on 24 December 2018 by Padukone on her Twitter account; it marks her first production venture. Filming took place from March to June 2019 in New Delhi and Mumbai. [5] Days before the film's release, Padukone visited students who were brutalised during the 2020 JNU Attack, which led to a divided response on Twitter. A few right-wing magazines later wrongly reported that the religion of the acid thrower in the film was changed from a Muslim into a Hindu character. The film was theatrically released in India on 10 January 2020. [6] The film was allowed by the government to be exhibited without payment of taxes in the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. [7] [8] [9] It received positive reviews from critics. [10] [11] Premise [ edit] The film is based on the real-life story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. [12] Cast [ edit] Release [ edit] On 10 December 2019, the official trailer was launched by Fox Star Studios. The film was theatrically released on 10 January 2020 in India. [15] The film was allowed by the government to be exhibited without payment of taxes in the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. [7] [8] [9] On 7 January 2020, Padukone joined a protest-gathering at Jawaharlal Nehru University against the 2020 JNU Attack against left wing students and passage of CAA 2019. [16] [17] Bharatiya Janata Party ’s student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad is blamed for the attack. [18] The visit angered BJP leaders who expressed it in social media. [18] Soon enough, the hashtags BoycottChhapaak and BlockDeepika began trending in Indian Twitter with members of the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party contributing in its proliferation. [16] [19] [20] [21] In response, ISupportDeepika was floated which gained greater traction and by the end of the day, her follower count had increased significantly. [20] [22] Actor Varun Dhawan talked about similar calls for boycott of his film Dilwale, and stated that the boycott may hurt the business, so it is used as a scare tactics meant to prevent people from expressing their opinion in public. He supported Deepika in condemning the attacks stating it is wrong to not do it. [23] On 8 January, social media users criticized the filmmaker Meghna Gulzar alleging that she changed the name and religion of the characters in the film. [24] Several right-wing magazines, Swarajya and Opindia wrongly reported that the name of the attacker who was a Muslim in real life, was changed into a Hindu name "Rajesh", in the film. [18] BJP MP and Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo called the change deliberate and "absolute hypocrisy". [25] BJP MP from South Delhi, Ramesh Bidhuri made calls to public for a boycott of the movie. [25] BJP MP Subramanian Swamy called it a defamation and informed legal action against the makers for this. [18] Mumbai Mirror reported that in past the filmmakers making films based on real life incidents had the liberty to change the names as well as the storyline in their films. [24] The visit to JNU by Deepika was seen by Mumbai Mirror as the reason for an aggressive stand was taken against the film. [24] These claims were debunked by the co founder of Newslaundry Abhinandan Sekhri, who had watched a special screening of the film Chhapaak in Delhi. He stated that the claims of the attacker belonging to the Hindu religion were false, since the movie showed him as a Muslim. [18] Journalist Radhika Sharma from PTI reported that Rajesh was the name of Malti’s boyfriend. The acid attacker was called Bashir Khan urf Babboo in the film. [18] Advocate Aparna Bhat, who represented Agarwal in the case fought at Patiala House Courts, pursued legal action against the makers for not mentioning her in the film, "to protect her identity and preserve her integrity". [26] [27] Reception [ edit] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 86% based on 14 reviews. [28] Teo Bugbee of The New York Times reviewed that Chhapaak "succeeds in balancing extremes. It is at once a pleasing and buoyant inspirational story, and a realistic depiction of the brutal aftermath of acid attacks. " [29] Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express credited the film for portraying "drama without dreaded melodrama" and highlighted Padukone's "solid, realised performance" to be its prime asset. [30] Anna tticad of first post in a mixed review wrote"The blend Massey achieves is what Chhapaak needed as a whole. Without that, what we are left with are good intentions, a heart in the right place, a major star taking a huge risk with an unorthodox role and a bunch of pluses that somehow do not come together to deliver an immersive experience. " [31] Writing for The Hindu, Namrata Joshi summarised that "Padukone’s performance and Meghna Gulzar’s direction ensure that Chhapaak is like a splash that leaves you misty with emotions, if not entirely drenched". [32] Ankur Pathak of HuffPost labelled it "a quietly powerful social commentary, a film that never allows you to be comfortable" and considered Padukone's performance to be a career best. [33] Uday Bhatia of Mint wrote that it "earnestly highlights a depressingly common horror", adding that it "deals squarely with its subject without quite transcending it". [34] In a mixed review, Anupama Chopra praised Padukone's performance but added that the film "hovers dangerously close to becoming a public service announcement. The messaging becomes bigger than the movie, which reduces the impact". [35] Conversely, Sukanya Verma of commended Gulzar for documenting " Chhapaak ' s grim reality barefacedly without losing sight of its character's quiet determination to fight the reasons that make such heinous crimes possible in the first place". [36] Box office [ edit] Chhapaak earned ₹ 4. 77 crore at the domestic box office on its opening day. On the second day, the film collected ₹6. 90 crore. On the third day, the film collected ₹7. 35 crore, taking total opening weekend collection to ₹19. 02 crore. [3] As of 31 January 2020, with a net of ₹ 39. 35 crore in India and ₹ 16. 03 crore overseas, the film has a worldwide gross collection of ₹ 55. 38crore. [3] The film has been a commercially successful venture considering it is a critically acclaimed art film. The aesthetics of a Film Companion interview are just on another level: the fonts, the colour palette, the music: all woven together to create something short of art. Great choice to shoot outside in the sun instead of some dull studio, letting us see a little of the subject's life and journey. This comment was my favourite: He and Sneha share this great camaraderie and it was lovely to see that! Just one criticism: You also did that to Sobhita and now to Vikrant. Why is it so strange and why do you have to keep bringing up the fact that these "celebrities" lead a normal life? That's a very absurd way to celebrate or appreciate it. Can't you just let them be. You always look so amused and keep repeating these questions like how you are you normal, it is unusual for a sta r. Excuse me, you just conducted interviews where everybody was humble and down to earth. This is kinda annoying now. I couldn't agree more and I'd made a comment along similar lines on another thread. She kept making a big deal about how he doesn't get papped (obviously, he's not famous enough) or that he plays carrom with his friends. She overdoes the whole "shocked at your normality" thing and it really is annoying. Sadly, it is her personality and there's nothing she can do to change it. I don't know how people tolerate her.

Level 1 आमरस पुरणपोळी... Original Poster 166 points · 25 days ago · edited 25 days ago! Pro gamer move! Though state government will loose opportunity to earn 9% cgst + local tax in such financially damp times, Still as movie is based on sensitive topic, I think its good decision. level 2 And Bhakto ki jo jalegi isse xDxD. level 2 Hopefully they'll pass the savings onto the movie-goers and reduce ticket prices so more people can go watch it. level 1 I really love the fact that she went to JNU in solidarity with the students and having a celebrity of her status has really helped the cause. Having said that I don't think declaring movies tax free helps anyone. It is unnecessary revenue reduction. Political parties give these tax incentives to movies just because they want to pay these people money. Like I remember few days ago some BJP rule state declared super 30 as tax free. What did they achieve from it? level 2 Tax free ia done to movies with social cause. Chapak is a serious social movie. That makes it all the more better when they do do it, but is not a requirement. Would you be so willing to put your feet in every other thing if that had the potential to bankrupt you? What do you think will happen if srk or amir joined the protest? Most people who are actively supporting it either have political connections themselves level 2 So pondicherry ko vanakkam level 1 I don't understand why this is relevant to anybody. The only people that win here are the producers. Sure they'll run a few extra shows, but the movie will end up on TV and streaming soon enough, I have no idea why any of the 99% should celebrate or care about this. level 2 We're a rotten people in this rotten world 12 points · 25 days ago The thing is producers making money from movies like this motivates them to make more movies focused on issues like this. level 2 Well, Deepika Padukone is also the producer of this movie. level 1 next level piss-take on sanghis lol level 1 It will be tax free in all congress states. Level 1 Kangana speaking Hindi sounds good and genuine - sick of the star kids whose mangled Hindi (with a convent school accent meaning they have no idea of where to put the emphasis) sounds false. Also kudos for promoting a competitor's film - whatever be the background, I do not remember one star promoting another is such a straightforward manner before. She does have a personal angle in that her sister is a victim which makes all the more poignant and real. level 2 Honestly her Hindi sounds so sweet to my ears! I literally repeated it just for that haha Especially as a PIO since I never really hear how it sounds or is supposed to sound (always hear that weird urdu mix in bollywood too). Meanwhile bollywood actresses fake their accents and sound fake, unrelatable, corny and weird af DoonT sehh thahT abowT mE I've struggled yah no? level 1 Male stars promote each other’s films, they plant their own films in the other’s promotions when the films are releasing together or close to each each. Why is this not okay? And Kangana has a legitimate reason too. We all know what her sister went through. She didn’t make it up. Her sister even congratulated Meghna and Deepika when their movie was announced last year. She’s hitting two birds with one stone. Actually, three. Acid attacks are a reality even today all across the country, from big cities to small towns. Talking about it in this positive light where the victim is not a victim but someone who uses this incident as an obstacle and a learning opportunity to become a more radiant human being is a good thing. level 1 This is case of kill em with kindness ♥️ level 2 Comment deleted by user 26 days ago ( More than 1 child) level 1 Also Kudos to her! Rangoli just posted this. After what Deepika did to Judgementall hai kya, Kangoli didnt have to support chhapaak. But they saw the bigger picture. level 1 Lol love how she keeps saying ‘Panga’ so nonchalantly l level 1 Promotions or not, I love women who openly support other women. I'm critical of both for other reasons, but when they do the right thing it's right. If women don't support other women for the right causes, then who will? I really wish in Bollywood the future would be female, but we honestly have a very long way to go. level 1 No idea if Kangana had help with the speech beautifully worded! I hope both Chapaak and Panga do well. Adding on to what everyone has been saying, I completely agree that it is very kind of Kangana to agree to promote Chapaak after all the tricks Deepika has pulled. level 1 Why the either/or? Good for Kangana, and good for Deepika too. Bollywood or female actors aren't in such a zero-sum space as we all seem to think they are. level 1 I appreciate Kangana for doing this. She could have easily said no to it. So much better than Deepika's publicity stunt supporting JNU students. That seemed so orchestrated. She had nothing to say in support either. What a joke! level 1 She is also promoting Panga 🤣 level 1 Kangana ranaut is such a nice human being, god bless Kangana ranaut level 1 It's because of fox star producing both have sounded more genuine if she was not using the word panga multiple times on the video.. Trust me if panga producers were some other studio the sisters will be going after Deepika and chapak for supporting jnu students.. level 2 I am aware of fox producing both films. But that doesn't mean Kangana had to do this or thank Deepika. She could have easily made a vague statement of acid attack without mentioning Deepika. I just thought it was nice of her level 2 Kangana was also promoting her movie as well and why not? As an actor she has all rights to promote her movie on any platform through any medium. And Kangana meant every word she spoke! In fact DP should thank her for being genuine and appreciating the entire team of Chhapak! level 2 Rangoli has already slammed DP for the JNU act, and she also tweeted against the entire B'wood calling them rapists and underworld people. check her accnt.

As far as solo openings go, Kangana and Alia are ahead. I would Alia is even ahead of Kangana and can cement her place as top leading actress with Gangubai, Kangana has her pull and even Judgmental Hai Kya opened higher than Chhapak. On the other hand The Sky Is Pink's performance shows that the PC has no solo star power. Rani is super impressive and also has her own franchise with the Mardaani and she is also well capable of a 50+crore lifetime gross on her own. level 2 Tbh I feel PC no longer has any skin in the game but that's for lack of trying. Deepika doesn’t need to show anything to anyone. Hmmph. level 2 I think there were more protests against PK. A good movie never fails to attract viewers. level 2 I think they are trying to make it into a movement hence a 'higher' win for her. The pension fund, the social initiative. Wait till she makes herself the ambassador of this like the mental health in India and talks it around for years to come in interviews, print what have you. I just hope survivors do get something (actually a lot) out of this. level 1 Deepika’s film #Chhapaak is collecting ₹2Cr everyday in a country of population of 130Cr people. So basically she is the real #2RsPeople! 🤭🤭🤭 level 1 I feel like this film might be looked at kindly in the near future and will reflect on Deepika's filmography in a positive way. level 2 Idk man makeup sucked big time in this movie. level 2 It has like 4/10 on Imdb right now, so I really won't vouch for that mate. level 1 "Aisi bhi kya majboori thi", deepika would want to wonder. level 1 Makeup looks like the other side of an overcooked omelette. I have a dry sense of humor. level 2 Nope these things don't matter. People are more independent in their thoughts than most celebrities believe. Dangal had the same situation but it was a blockbuster. It is a good excuse for Deepika and Meghna now though. However the ground truth is film is just bad. That's why it did not work. Though the film deals with an emotionally-charged subject, it steers clear of melodrama. ET Bureau | Last Updated: Jan 13, 2020, 09. 32 AM IST Meghna Gulzar’s 'Chhapaak' is the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Genre: Biography Rating: Director: Meghna Gulzar Cast: Deepika Padukone, Vikrant Massey, Madhurjeet Sarghi Meghna Gulzar’s ' Chhapaak ' is the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. The film moves in a non-linear route, and we’re introduced to Malti (Padukone) after the crime has been committed. She’s on the look-out for a new job, still coming to terms with the emotional and physical scars that the attack has left on her. Her dreams of becoming a singer have been put on hold, and she is now busy with an NGO working for acid victims, court cases, and more medical procedures. Her father’s death and brother’s illness add to the troubles. During these tough times, support pours in through her lawyer Archana (Sarghi) and Amol (Massey), who employs her at his NGO. Though the film deals with an emotionally-charged subject, it steers clear of melodrama. But it’s not an easy watch and there are more than a few uncomfortable truths to be digested. Padukone is the star of the show, delivering a poignant performance. That at no point does she succumb to self-pity makes her (and the film) a winner. In supporting roles, Massey and Sarghi pitch in with commendable performances. Chhapaak full movie online free. Chapak couldn't have competed with Tanhaji in any case. People are saying that it suffered because of Deepika's PR stunt. But I feel it might have benefitted as the awareness of the movie before the stunt was pretty low. Chapak is a movie on a very sensitive subject and is apparently well made going by the director and reviews I have read. But it is an uncomfortable movie about suffering. You can't take your kids and your frame of mind needs to be suitable for wanting to go and watch it in a theatre. Sad that Deepika resorted to such an ugly stunt. Personally I somehow avoid movies with suffering especially these days. I love movies with gore and violence but not suffering. Possibly family and kids do that to one. As for Tanhaji I saw it today and loved it. The 3d effects are amazing and 3d technology has been used better than most Hollywood movies I saw recently, IMHO. Music is super and battle scenes are Hollywood/bahubali quality. However the story is pretty linear and simplistic. They should have added more nuances as the material was there.

Yes, its quite common. Aamir mentioned it in a 1997 interview: " They don't fail to understand my approach They simply tell lies. Yes it hurts tremendously when they do this. Regarding Yash Chopra's accusation I'd like to put things in perspective. In the first narration he told me that Sunny ( Deol) and I would fight but it would be Juhi ( The woman whom I was obsessed with and harassing) who would kill me. That was poetic justice. Then I came to know that he had narrated a different climax to Sunny.... So I asked for a joint narration.... if you have a casting coup like Sunny and me.... In any case it made more sense to have a heroine who has been terrorised all along killing her tormentor. Yash ji has also said that I had second thoughts about playing a negative role. See, I didn't mind being beaten up by Deepak Tijori in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.. from it... in fact, I would not have glamorised the role the way it was done in the film if I had done it. The character had a mental problem and it should have been played accordingly. ".

Malti (Deepika Padukone) was attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi, in 2005. Through her story, the film makes an attempt to understand the on-ground consequences of surviving an acid attack in India, the medico-legal-social state of affairs that transpires after the acid has been hurled and the face is irreparably burnt. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Produced by Fox Star Studios, Deepika Padukone, Govind Singh Sandhu, and Meghna Gulzar, written by Atika Chohan and Meghna Gulzar, Chhapaak is set to hit theatres on 10th January 2020. Movies | Chhapaak Review: Life and Activism After an Acid Attack The movie is based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, who was burned with acid in New Delhi 2005. Credit... Fox Star Studios The Indian drama “Chhapaak” succeeds in balancing extremes. It is at once a pleasing and buoyant inspirational story, and a realistic depiction of the brutal aftermath of acid attacks. The movie is based on the life of the activist Laxmi Agarwal, who was burned with acid in New Delhi 2005, and has since become an advocate for banning the sale of acid in India. Details like names and ages have been changed, but the substance of Agarwal’s story remains the same. Deepika Padukone plays Malti, a young woman who is assaulted by a family friend, after she rejects his romantic advances. In flashbacks, she recalls the crime and her arduous recovery; in the present, she takes a job helping other survivors and, with a team of female lawyers, tries to change Indian law to reflect the seriousness of the violence committed against her. The director Meghna Gulzar takes a light approach to this heavy subject, using familiar stylistic flourishes to soften the story. Though there are no staged musical numbers, the score includes several songs, with the first introduced in the immediate aftermath of the attack on Malti. The music draws the story into the heightened, emotionally manageable space of melodrama, an approach that remains consistent throughout. There are scenes of anguish, but the film doesn’t make a spectacle of pain. And as Malti, Padukone is by turns inquisitive, watchful and serene but never maudlin. The visual effects used to represent Malti’s burns are a rather extraordinary mix of makeup and prosthetics, which subtly change as she receives treatments. Gulzar has also cast real survivors of acid assaults and the camera rests just as plainly on their faces as it does upon Malti’s. Gulzar emphasizes the dignity of survivors and the joy that exists even after devastating injury. Many of the most moving scenes feature Malti and real survivors playing and fantasizing about future treatments, their faces lit up not in pain but in laughter. Chhapaak Not rated. In Hindi, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 50 minutes.
